Diabetes Testing Supplies The one time scourge of diabetes has fallen under decent control in recent years as the medical technology used to treat the condition has advanced. Today, with the research and medical advancements that allow diabetes patients to keep close track of their blood sugar and the medication they need to remain healthy, it is no longer the life threatening disease it once was. While many early diabetes patients needed to have their blood tested regularly, at home tests have been developed through numerous technologies making it much easier to keep close track of a diabetic’s health. Self Test Kits Self testing kits for diabetics are now available in drug stores and pharmacies nationwide. There are two different kinds of self testing kits – test strips and blood glucose meters. By placing a drop of blood on a strip and testing it with the meter, a diabetic can know their blood glucose level in a matter of seconds. Users can choose from two different styles of meters as well – one with a color coded readout and another with a digital readout of the exact number. Lancets used to poke and draw blood for the test often come with the blood glucose meter and are often specific to the unit that was purchased. In recent years, the cost of such machines has dropped dramatically, now only costing as little as $65. Styles of Blood Glucose Meters In the realm of diabetes supplies, blood glucose meters have advanced considerably in recent years, allowing people to choose from any number of options. Different variants include:
There are a wide variety of other blood glucose meter variants – each designed to make the process much easier. Common brand names such as One-Touch Ultra and Accu-Check have become very popular in recent years because they make diabetes testing so simple. Insulin Delivery Systems While once it was almost required that a diabetes patient get a shot for their insulin, today those patients can choose from a variety of different methods to take their insulin each day. Insulin pumps are among the most expensive, costing upwards of $5,000 for a quality machine. However, other options such as infusers or jet injectors which cost around $1,000 are easy solutions for an affordable price. The most common insulin delivery system is the simple pen injector or syringe though. Pen injectors cost as little as $45 and are much easier and faster than traditional syringes. Safe Use of Self Test Kits You should always remember that a self test kit is a means to make your life easier, not a substitute for the advice and testing techniques of your doctor. Always calibrate your results and compare them with a doctor’s results, especially when first using a new machine. Read the instructions thoroughly and be prepared to take a second, more advanced test through a lab if the readings do not appear right.
